Here always in the carnival Pont-sur-Sambre, called Mi-Carême. Here are again those of Dunkerque, taken as they were resting between two marches and dances. It is a street after the crossroad where the photos before were taken.

On these three pictures the people are wearing old clothes and old uniforms. Some wear intentionnaly worker clothes. They are of another carnival group of Pont-sur-Sambre, la "Belle Epoque".

106.The show-band of Rousies and the Majorettes.

This is a group we have seen near the tower at the beginning of my photo report about the town-parade of the carnival of Mi-Carême. You can see what for music-instruments the people are playing. They look like xylophone and make a very nice sound. At the right you see anew an house with blind windows of people that made in the past walls instead of the windows not to pay so much taxes. And the sign-boards on the wall are not very large so that we can see through them.
Majorettes are very popular in the North of France. Many girls like to be Majorettes. When they are they have to dance on the street and at the same time turning a piece of wood in their hands and to throw them to the sky all in the same rythm.

Now comes a new band in the town-parade of the carnival of Pont-sur-Sambre. It is the Municipale Fanfare of Rousies. To make music in the streets at the spring-feast is good to chase away the winter cold.
This group comes from a little town Rousies nearby Maubeuge about 20km away from Pont-sur-Sambre in the North-East of it.

Here you can see a group which make a wedding at the old manner. You can look at the old hats and there is also a choir girl (but in the past there were only choir-boys).
The photo was taken in Pont-sur-Sambre at the carnival parade of Mi-Carême two months ago.
You can see also in the back of the picture houses with blind windows. In the past people must pay much money for their taxes when they had many windows. The money that people had to pay at the town did depend of the number of windows there houses had. So that much people let close their windows with bricks.

Here is a witch. You know, by the Mi-Carême the witches are chased away and come on Haloween again. Because in spring and summer all people are in the streets and they can see the witches, so that they cannot stay without be seen. If they do not want to be burnt, they must go for the Brülage des Bosses.

Le petit train de la gaité or the Railway of the Joyce or of the Happyness is a group from Pont-sur-Sambre. Here you can see the driver of this train without trails. He seems to be very happy like the name of the train seems to say.

Here is the street to Bavay. It is the main road. On which at the end of the feast a fire shall be made. The main road leads from Aulnoye-Aymeries to Bavay, the roman town. This road is all straight, during 8 km, because it is an old roman way. On this part it has a North-South direction. I think it was the way from Bavay which had something like 6 or 8 roman way to Lugdunum (Lyon) or to Trier (Trevira).

Here is the town district of Quartes, with the church. It is the same church you can see with its large back above the river on the other photos. But from the side it looks not so large. At the end of the street, you can see another bareer with a man in the middle. We do not see it here very well, but it is a policeman.

I've got a film that I took before the feast of the Mi-Carême of Pont-sur-Sambre. I took this photos as I was going to the Carnival. Paul thought the defile was on another side of the town and we made a longer way as we had to do normally, so that we came a little to late for the beginning, but we saw some things along the way which were not like usually.
Here this barreer protect the center of the town of the cars. So that the street are all empty. It is very calm then. And it looks like in the past centuries as there were no cars!. The ambiance of the town is then different, it is not so busy, there is no loud noise, it gives a melancolic ambiance which the town do not have normally.

Here you can see not only the group but also their carnival hats. In Dunkerque it was spoken (and also now it is spoken a little flamish), and for the carnival they have the same customs like in Germany. In Dunkerque is every year a very big carnival.

Now I'm coming at the head of the defilé where there is also the people of a group of the carnival of Dunkerque. First the musicians are playing before the group. This music sounds a little scotish but Daunkerque is a great harbour and the sailors travelled much so that they have musics that sound like one another. They are playing on fifres that looks like flutes but have another sound.

Is it a bass tuba ? I think. At least it is the biggest instrument of the Fanfare of Sous-Le-Bois playing in Pont-sur-Sambre. Maubeuge is about between 17km or 19 km far away from Pont-sur-Sambre. There are two roads that leads to Maubeuge.

The town fanfare of Sous-Le-Bois playing at the Carnival of Pont-sur-Sambre. Sous-Le-Bois is a town district of Maubeuge which is the biggest town in the neighbourhood. It is in the Val de Sambre and has 36 OOO inhabitants.

La Belle Epoque; La belle époque is a carnival group of Pont-sur-Sambre. They are dancing near the Tower at the beginning of the carnival defilé. You can see also the sign-boards which lead to the surrounding towns and villages.

On the road there are more people who are walking as in other times, but to day (the second of April) the cars are prohibited in the midtown. So that it gives to the town a very quiet apperence and one can here only from the far a nostalgic music. Because the feast was beginning as I made this photo, and we were a little to late to see the first groups dance near the tower. On other days there are always a lot of cars which are on this road.

The water of the overfloaded becomes iced around the trees that are below the edge of the road. Roads near the river are built a little higher as the river but sometimes they are also overfloades (Foto taken in Pont on the road to Bachant).
